this sunburnt country
This sunburnt country… …its rivers feed mountains and carry our bloody waste, all the way to the sea. Its trees tell a story of ages gone – they link me to you, and you to all that lies beneath. And the dirt that clings to your soles/souls, both trodden and bare… is a story you carry with you, whether or not you choose to care. And any undoing, that may yet come… is simply a reflection of the damage we’ve done. In this great lands defence, we waged a war – both bloody and raw… maybe it’s time we asked ourselves, what we’ve been fighting for. You see as the sand below shoulders the great ocean deep, its beauty is framed by a power we cannot keep. And without respect for this great, majestic land… there may be nowhere safe left, for us to stand. Tis a gift you see, from the rainforests to the sea… Tis a thousand lives before ours, that share this greatness, I believe. This is for our brothers, our fathers, our sisters and our mothers. This is for the unsuspecting, the broken, the accepting… It is for those who scream, in tears of rage… and for those who sit and calmly contemplate. For this sky, is no more yours than mine. This ground I stand on, you too stand on, if not now – then in time. This sunburnt country, it’s warm inside. And with respect we should nurture and honour its pride.
