rainy nights

IMG_0056 11

Hiding behind shadows, settling where the darkness is lit, there is a man. His eyes are dark brown, and warm. They will melt you, like chocolate, if you are hungry and look for too long. He is bitter, and brooding, but he is sweet. His smile is wide, and genuine, but his eyes shine with defeat.

And I walk on by. My new shoes gather specks of dirt. I look down at them. I wish they were old shoes.

This man notices my new shoes. He looks down at his old shoes. He wishes they were new shoes.

And you think you’re entitled. Shame on you. And I thought I wasn’t worth it. Shame on me too.

It’s been too long in between songs. Pretty eyes on a pretty face – all that grows old after the chase.

And there were times I thought I would never have to change. There were things about me I was desperate to escape. But I’m changing, not escaping.

The little things, they stuck like glue. That was the difference between me, and you. And in your bag of tricks, there wasn’t a reason I should stay and try to fix, what was already broke.

And you think you’re entitled. Shame on you. And I thought I wasn’t worth it. Shame on me too.

There is a man. His eyes are wide. His heart is big, but still he hides.

I’m talking loud, but much too quiet. He peers out. He looks afraid.

And suddenly I’m running, and he is coming too. Chocolate eyes and breathless alibis. A thousand reasons why.

The streets are young. The day has barely begun. It’s just before the dawn.

The light reflects in pools of regret. It won’t happen again. I won’t let it happen again.

My shoes are new, and his have been worn through. But still, we dance in the rain. Just as we are different, we are exactly the same.
