there is no plan

So it dawned on me yesterday, as I devoted a day to my new little writing world, that I have five days before take off and absolutely no plan beyond landing in Bangkok airport.

This dawned on me as my Dad periodically spouted little pieces of information to help me on my adventure from his chair across the room (he delivers them with such eloquence).

“You better make sure you work out an evacuation plan at every place you stay. Have a plan. No plan and you’ll be done for”.

Not an unusual statement from my father. I’ve learnt to respond quickly with the obligatory “yes Dad,” a necessary requirement for the continuation of whatever I am working on at the time.

That may then be followed by a gruff “Huh?”

“Yes Dad, I will”.

But it dawned on me at that moment that not only do I not have an evacuation plan, I don’t even have a plan for takeoff. Oddly, for someone who uses organisation to tackle fear (wonder where I got that from?) I feel unusually calm about this whole lack of plan thing. It’s cool. I’ll just arrive at the airport, go to a hotel, get some food, have a beer and take it from there.

Maybe that can be my motto for this adventure, when the going gets tough: find a hotel, get some food, have a beer.

Idealistic. Perhaps.

All the writing I have done over the last two or three months I have filed under a category The Plan. Funny because five days from takeoff on my grand solo adventure there actually really is no plan.

A friend told me once… you can have a goal, but be flexible with your plan to reach it.

So, I have a goal or two. I have a few things I want to get out of this trip. And one way or another, I am confident I will achieve those goals. In the meantime, I’m just going to find a hotel, get some food and have a beer (in other words, buckle up and enjoy the ride…)
